The Penalty and Chase System in Starfield: How to Pay the Bounty on Your Head

4 sep 2023 at 15:09

Head bounties in Starfield are assigned if you've somehow broken the law. For example, if you attempted to steal resources or credits from an NPC using the Thief skill in front of a security guard or if you tried to kill the same guards or local residents.

The penalties start immediately – now, during your travels, enemy spacecraft will pursue and attack you. Another significant downside is that completing quests and exploring the world will become more challenging when you're constantly being pursued and apprehended.

In this guide, we'll explain how you can clear your name and even give yourself up to local law enforcement.

How the Fine System Works

A fine is imposed for each dangerous act we mentioned earlier – murder, assault on locals, theft, lock picking, etc.

You can view the total amount for your bounty on the map menu in the upper right corner.

In intergalactic space, the faction whose territory you committed the crimes in will pursue you. The fine amount depends on your reputation, the severity of the offense, and the region itself. For example, the United Colonies will strictly follow the law and restrict the main character, while the Crimson Fleet may be more lenient.

Possible consequences of accumulating fines:

  • Barrett, one of the possible companions in Starfield, may disapprove of your actions to the point of leaving your party;
  • Prohibition from being on planets belonging to a specific faction.

The higher the fine amount, the more diligently you will be pursued. They may even forget about you if the fine amount is too small.

Hiding from pursuing ships will be difficult, if not practically impossible. In open space, you will encounter several or more vessels that will immediately start firing. Without cheats, you're unlikely to withstand such pressure.

How to Pay off All Fines

To pay off fines for violations and get rid of persistent pursuers, find a special Trackers Alliance Self-Service Bounty Clearance Kiosk. It's located on every planet in major establishments such as bars, shops, etc. You can also create one at your own outpost.

Materials needed for crafting:

  • 4 Aluminum;
  • 2 Zero Wire;
  • 2 Beryllium.

Approach the terminal, interact with it, and check how much you owe to each faction.

How to Bribe

Sometimes you need to pay the fine on the spot, for example, if you were caught attempting to steal by security guards. You'll be directed to a security checkpoint where they will confiscate all stolen items and demand that you pay the fine.

This is where a bribe comes in handy. If you successfully perform the action, the guard will agree to return your stolen items and turn a blind eye to your crimes.

However, if your "Persuasion" and "Negotiation" skills are not high enough, the guard will refuse to return the stolen items and increase the fine amount several times. Proceed at your own risk.
