Lockpicking in Starfield

Lockpicking is one of the core mechanics in Starfield, allowing you to gain access to locked rooms or containers. Typically, valuable items and resources are hidden behind these locks.

How to Pick Locks in Starfield

To successfully pick a lock, you'll need a Digipick. This will initiate a mini-game where you usually need to rotate the pick to the correct position and feel for a distinct click.

In Starfield, the gameplay principle is slightly different. The panel will display rings with gaps and notches. The goal is to align all the notches with the gaps, as shown in the image. Rings will disappear one by one. Once you remove all the rings, the lock will open.

To open more difficult locks, you'll need to level up your Security skill. Starting at level zero, you can only pick novice locks. In total, there are 3 levels of lock difficulty in the game.

With each increase in Security level, you gain automatic attempts:

  • Level 1 - 2 automatic attempts;
  • Level 2 - 3 automatic attempts;
  • Level 3 - 4 automatic attempts;
  • Level 4 - 5 automatic attempts.

Where to Find Digipicks

If you successfully open a lock, the Digipick will be preserved. However, if you lose or exit the mini-game, it will break.

There are several ways to obtain Digipicks:

  • Purchase them from vendors in stores; the price is 35 credits;
  • Find them as loot on corpses or steal them from NPCs (requires the Theft skill);
  • Craft them.
If you encounter difficulties with opening a specific lock, simply retry the mini-game. Levels do not repeat, and the process is generated randomly.
