Disadvantages of Genshin Impact: 8 Main Minuses

4 oct 2021 at 22:27

In any project, there are two sides that contain its advantages and disadvantages. In Genshin Impact, there are many positive aspects, but there are also elements that overshadow the gameplay and overall experience. Some of these aspects may be avoided entirely, while others will accompany players as they progress through adventure ranks or the entire game.

8. Technical Support

In some games, technical support is a weak point, especially when it comes to Asian developers. In Genshin Impact, interaction with technical support is possible due to frequent bugs or account issues. If access to the account hasn't been lost, players can obtain a direct contact link from the game and receive a response in a short time—either on the same day or within a couple of days. However, for those unable to access their accounts, they will have to write an email in English and wait for a response for 10-15 days, which is the official response time stated by miHoYo. But feedback from some players and their forum questions suggest that the actual response time often exceeds the stated timeframe.

7. Co-op

In Genshin Impact, each player has their own Teyvat, and they rule over it, playing in complete solitude. However, the game positions itself as online, allowing interaction with other players. It's possible to enter other players' worlds or host guests in one's own world. But the level of activity is limited: all guests can do is accept invitations to dungeons from the world owner, collect curiosities, and obtain standard drops from monsters and bosses.

They cannot help with activating mechanisms, interacting with fairies, opening chests, and they even block the completion of certain quests and the ability to make purchases in stores. Additionally, player clubs/guilds/factions, auctions, and PvP are completely absent. As a result, co-op exists, but its purpose is unclear when there are limited opportunities for cooperative play. At higher adventure ranks and character levels, assistance is no longer necessary, and all events and content are designed for solo play.

6. Grind

Some players dislike grinding because it can become routine, boring, and tiresome. However, in Genshin Impact, grinding is a significant component of the game, and it involves grinding for various things continuously. Adventure experience for increasing ranks, money, character experience scrolls, materials for ascending heroes and weapons, artifacts, ascension gems, ingredients for cooking or potions... In many Asian games, this process is partially automated, but here, players have to manually farm everything with their own hands throughout the vast world.

5. Time Investment

Genshin Impact is addictive and requires more and more time. The story unfolds, new regions, characters, crafting, and quests are introduced, and all of this requires a significant amount of time from the player. Fishing, farming specific event cards, or attempting to complete 100% world exploration are particularly time-consuming activities. If playing without making in-game purchases and aiming for a 5-star character, it will take a considerable amount of time to accumulate enough primogems to obtain them—months may pass in the process.

It's worth mentioning the series of quests tied to real-time that refresh once a day, so completing them may take a week (daily refresh) or several days (refresh every 3 days). An example of the first type is the "Tales of Tatara" quest series featuring Neko the cat. The "Bough Keeper" quest belongs to the second type.

4. Endgame

Updates with new content are released every couple of months, while players explore and collect what's currently available. However, this content is not infinite—chests will eventually be opened, puzzles solved, trials completed, and characters maxed out. At that point, players realize that apart from daily quests, which take about half an hour, there's nothing else to do. Some players, especially those with ample game time, complete new locations, collect all the Oculus, solve mysteries, and find fairies in a matter of days. Once the region is 100% completed, there's nothing else to do until the next update.

Leveling up characters will only allow you to one-shot monster camps and bosses - there is no challenge for high-level players in the open world. The only place where you can try to prove yourself is the high floors of the Spiral Abyss, which reset every 15 days. After completing them to the maximum star rating, there is nothing else to do. It is possible that this will be addressed in the future.

3. Donation Price

Despite not directly offering the option to donate, Genshin Impact does have it. Whether or not to resort to it is solely the player's decision, and the thrill of making wishes, the desire to obtain exclusive cards or a large amount of resources from the Battle Pass assist in making that decision. Is it worth it? From one perspective, resources, characters, and weapons can be obtained without donation. During events, a significant amount of primogems and everything else can be obtained to obtain desired items.

But if you want to... Donating in Genshin Impact is expensive, just take a look at the cost of Genesis Crystals and Intertwined Fate, which provide more rewards. Purchased Genesis Crystals can be exchanged at a rate of 1:1 for Primogems for wishes. To make it clearer, it takes 180 wishes to have a 100% chance of obtaining an exclusive character (5* guaranteed to drop on the 90th attempt, but with a 50% chance for the exclusive one), which is 28,800 Primogems or the same amount of Genesis Crystals. With a promotion that doubles the purchase amount, spending 9,490 rubles (Russian currency) can get you 12,960 crystals, which is still not enough.

If you buy each item with the same promotion, you can get a total of 26,160 crystals/primogems for 18,908 rubles, and without it, for the same amount, the player will only get 13,080. Overall, to get 180 wishes with the promotion, you need to spend 23,088 rubles (not counting the Primogems the player already has). The numbers are quite significant, aren't they? But the Blessing of the Welkin Moon can still be a worthy choice if you have plans to play for a long time and have some disposable income.

2. Character Drop Rates

Genshin Impact is a gacha game, and players have to accept that. Almost all characters and particularly powerful weapons can only be obtained from banners, and the most desired ones are the 5*. However, the chance of obtaining a legendary character is only 0.6%. Every 10 attempts, a 4* item or higher is guaranteed to drop, and the probability increases by 1%. The guaranteed drop will only happen on the 90th wish... and there's a 50% chance it will be a standard legendary character. In this case, a second type of guarantee appears - the next 5* will definitely be exclusive, and players take advantage of this to save the guarantee for the desired character.

1. Original Resin

The main bottleneck in Genshin Impact. Resin is used to claim rewards from Ley Line Blossoms, world bosses, and domains (including the weekly bosses in them). The amount of resin consumed depends on the challenge's rank, ranging from 20 to 60 units at a time. In total, a player can have 160 units in reserve, but the limit can be exceeded by manually replenishing it. This is enough to defeat 4 weekly bosses, 8 Ley Line Blossoms or domains, or 4 world bosses. However, this is actually very little - materials may be required in large quantities, and at some point, there is a need for good artifacts with suitable stats.

Resin naturally replenishes at a rate of 1 unit every 8 minutes, and in 24 hours, it will replenish 180 units, and in a week, a total of 1,260 units. Of course, it can be replenished using fragile resin - a consumable item with a value of 60 units, but it can only be obtained as a reward from the Battle Pass or by increasing the Adventure Rank. This is not the only way - you can also spend primogems, but the cost will increase for each attempt. This method can be used up to 6 times a day, spending a total of 800 primogems. The dependency of Genshin Impact's gameplay on resin is a major drawback and significantly hinders progress if this resource and its replenishment methods are exhausted.
