In order to survive successfully in the game Valheim, you will need to build yourself a house. It is the foundation of everything, and without it, you simply won't be able to survive. Then, build workbenches, fences, and animal pens for yourself.

To build all of this, you need a lot of wood, and not just one type. To obtain quality furniture or animal pens, you will need good-quality wood. It doesn't lie on the ground; you have to chop it down.

Why trees are needed in Valheim

The main resource of the game is the growing trees. After you chop them down, you will get the largest amount of wood. Moreover, chopping down trees in Valheim is much more convenient than collecting twigs or trudging through swamps.

Wood can be divided into regular and quality wood. Each type is obtained in a different way and from different trees. To obtain regular wood, you need to chop down fir, pine, or beech trees. To get quality wood, chop down birch or oak trees.

How to properly chop down fir, pine, or beech trees

To chop them down, first acquire a stone axe. If you haven't got one yet, it's not difficult to do so – take 5 units of wood and 4 stones.

Collecting them is not difficult; they will be lying on the ground interchangeably – stones with branches. Crafting an axe does not require a workbench. Once you have made yourself an axe, you can start chopping down fir, pine, and beech trees.

How to chop down birch and oak trees

Here it gets more complicated; to chop down such a tree, you will need a bronze axe. For this, you will have to go to the forge and make yourself an axe out of copper and tin.

Without it, you won't be able to get birch or oak. They won't yield to fists or a stone axe 100%. These trees have high durability when it comes to chopping them down. You can find birch and oak in the meadows biome.
