Regardless of the response you give Mathis, he will ask to forget about everything and will abandon his plan to kill Delgado, which would have led to dire consequences for the Crimson Fleet. Your choice won't influence anything; in any circumstances, you'll be able to encounter Mathis again at the "Last Nova" bar, where he will make it clear that he abandoned his treacherous plan.
