Character Customisation in Starfield
In Starfield, much like in previous Bethesda games, a strong emphasis is placed on character customization. Players have the ability to create a completely unique protagonist, not only in terms of appearance but also in terms of character traits, which were present in Fallout New Vegas but were absent in subsequent company games. In today's article, we'll explore the customization options available in Starfield, what can be adjusted, and the purpose of each function.
How to Customize Your Protagonist in Starfield
The ability to create a character is provided right at the beginning of the game, which is logical. During character creation, you can choose the physique, facial features, change the color and shape of the hair, and much more. As always, players will have access to basic presets if they don't wish to create a unique character. Additionally, some ready-made presets can be downloaded, allowing you to get characters from other games, for example.
Biometric ID
The first step in character creation is to choose the Biometric ID. It's here that you can make a selection from 40 ready-made presets (in the base game). This is also where your custom presets, which you've downloaded from our site, will be displayed.
After choosing one of the basic presets, you can finally start editing. You can take a pre-existing character and change them beyond recognition by adjusting various parameters.
Body
Next to the Biometric ID field is an option to customize the character's physique. It is in this field that you can make your character very slim, overweight, or muscular, depending on your preferences. The customization is done using a slider, allowing you to fine-tune the body to the smallest detail.
In this field, you can also choose pre-made body types and even the character's gait. The selected gait will determine the animations used when walking and running.
Face
The character's face can be customized in various ways. This category includes a wide range of settings, not just for the face but also for other body parts. In this field, you can choose the character's skin tone, facial shape, hair color and style, add or remove beards and mustaches, and much more. Many facial customization features are familiar from other Bethesda projects.
Naturally, with mods, you can add new customization options. Similar mods can be found in the "Cosmetic Mods" category on our site.
Background
In the character customization menu, you can choose the character's background, their history. There are many options available here, with a total of 20 options in the base version of the game. The background system is similar to the sign system from Tes IV Oblivion, where a chosen sign provided various bonuses.
The character's background determines their starting abilities. For example, choosing the "Diplomat" option grants the hero three skills that affect persuasion:
- Persuasion. Significantly increases the chance of success during persuasion.
- Diplomacy. Allows convincing hostile characters to stop fighting for a certain period of time.
- Bartering. Reduces buying prices by 5% and increases selling prices by 10%.
Each background provides 3 skills that will be useful later on. The choice depends on the preferred playstyle.
Character Traits
The last field allows you to select character traits. This is an optional feature, and you can play without them. This is done for one simple reason - character traits provide good bonuses but also come with a mandatory negative effect.
There is one important feature associated with this function. If you choose a character trait that hinders your gameplay, the game allows you to completely get rid of them by completing certain quests/mini-tasks. We will cover the full list of character traits in another article.
