All Lethal Company lore: what happens in the game

10 jan 2024 at 11:40

At first glance, Lethal Company is a fun cooperative game with creepy monsters and bosses that are amusing to kill with friends, getting scared and running in fear through dark corridors. The pixel graphics and dark-toned design add to the atmosphere. The gameplay is simple and straightforward, the features are interesting but quite limited, and there aren't many items available for purchase.

However, this doesn't negate the fact that the game has a clear and specific storyline that you can uncover as you progress. Yes, there is no ultimate goal in the game. The player slightly advances in learning the lore as they explore the world, and many things and facts are yet to be explained. But even now, we can form basic assumptions and theories based on what the developers have given us.

What Do We Know About the World of Lethal Company?

The world of Lethal Company and the surrounding environment are represented by moons - planets that players move across in search of resources to sell and meet quotas. At the center of all events is the mysterious and influential Company - a huge corporation overseeing everything.

It can be assumed that the Company is not very interested in the fate of its employees. Like any large commercialized company, its goal is to gain as much personal benefit, specifically credits. It doesn't matter that this entails the loss of human lives. The coldness and calculative nature of the Company are confirmed by Sigurd's journal entries.

Timeline of Events

From the terminal, you can accurately determine the year in which the events of the game take place - 2532 AD. Humanity has advanced considerably, freely moving in space. However, it cannot be said that the technologies used shine with modernity and practicality. Or employees of the Company don't get them. Workers are forced to fight monsters with shovels, use outdated technologies by today's standards - buzzers, regular flashlights, battery-operated devices, electric shockers, mines. All these gadgets are familiar to us, and it's amazing that they haven't changed in 500 years.

This fact leads to the assumption that humanity has been in a strong decline or stagnation for many centuries, or only Employees are deprived of the benefits of civilization.

Additional hints are the posters on the spacecraft urging to donate excess food and not be wasteful. Perhaps humanity has reached a point where global resources and food are insufficient to feed the entire population. And that's why some people, namely Employees, are effectively sent to their deaths as expendable material.

Who Are the Employees?

Employees are people working in the Company and fulfilling the quota. They have only one task: collect resources and sell as much as possible to earn credits. They have to do this in harsh and frightening conditions, with monsters and adverse weather.

The orange color of the suits may indicate that Employees are active prisoners. This is the traditional color of overalls worn by American prisoners. Perhaps that's why the Company's workers exist in such terrible conditions. Their lives are not valuable to anyone, their only task is to get credits, regardless of the conditions and the cost. If Employees fail to meet the quota, they pay a high price - they are left outside the spacecraft and forced to die on the moon surrounded by wild creatures.

Perhaps Employees are ordinary law-abiding citizens forced to accept hard but paid work due to difficult life circumstances. This is not known for certain at the moment.

Sigurd's Data Journal Entries

Sigurd's Journal is the main source of information about the game's lore.

Sigurd is an American (presumably), a man, a former employee of the Company. The events of the entries throw us back to the year 1968 - 500 years earlier. Sigurd performs tasks for the Company along with his colleagues: Desmond, Richard, and Jess. Sigurd is the author of the bestiary from which we can learn all the information about the monsters inhabiting different moons.

Sigurd decides to go to work for the Company to become independent and finally gain independence from his parents. At the same time, he poorly understands how he got a job in the company: he was interviewed over the phone, and he never saw the employers in person at any stage of the employment process. A similar situation arose with other team members.

Sigurd arrives on the spacecraft and starts working in good health. At the same time, the man keeps a diary in which he reflects on everything happening and gives instructions to future Company employees. Record keeping is not regulated, so perhaps Sigurd tried to hide them, at least from the company itself.

By the way, the spacecraft on which the team was located, and on which the player is, is autopiloted. The team cannot set the course of flight and move except on the instructions of the Company.

From Sigurd's notes, we learn many interesting facts: how to fight with which monsters, what he thinks about the surrounding world, what bothers and annoys him in his current job. Everything goes as usual until the man encounters strange sounds from the radio through which he usually communicated with his unfortunate comrades.

Main Secret of Lethal Company

On the other side, Sigurd hears a strange and unfamiliar voice claiming to be from the Golden Planet, which has been completely engulfed by a creepy monster.

The Golden Planet is a local legend about a celestial object that was previously destroyed by a meteor strike. The person on the other side of the radio insists that this is not true.

At some point, Sigurd suspects that the mysterious person may be on the other side of the wall in the company building. The person does not confirm this information, becomes angry, and cuts off communication. Now Sigurd is obsessed with the idea of finding out the origin of this voice, the secret of the Golden Planet, and what is really beyond the wall.

Sigurd begins to have nightmares. He reflects more and more on what is happening on the ship, thinks about the strangeness of his employment, and even starts to forget how he ended up here. It can be assumed that the man is slowly losing his mind, either due to the hard work and oppressive atmosphere combined with absolutely monotonous work and the horror of what is happening, or because of knowledge of some secret that was previously unavailable to other Employees.

In the metal reception area, where the monster with tentacles takes items, Sigurd increasingly hears moans and cries. He assumes that the creature taking the scrap metal could have taken other Employees behind the wall.

By the way, when Sigurd was working, the tentacled monster did not appear so clearly – the Corporation still tried to hide its true nature and the creepy monsters helping to achieve their plans.

The culmination is the death of Richard. Presumably, he was killed by one of the monsters wandering the corridor, but his comrade's body was never found. Jess and Desmond are not interested in uncovering the truth, and this greatly angers Sigurd. He believes that his friends are cowards and that it is necessary to understand what is happening around them.

In place of Richard, they send newcomer Lucas. He doesn't even realize what he's about to face, but he is already terribly scared and anxious. The Corporation is quite indifferent to the death of the previous employee. It promised to inform Richard's relatives of his death and sent a replacement employee, again, as expendable material that just needs to cover the created "gap."

After that, inaccuracies creep into Sigurd's statements. It seems that the Corporation's exposure is caused by confusion in the man's mind. It is possible that Richard's death, which Sigurd tried to prevent by rushing to help his comrade, left its mark. Despite the fear, the man remains the only one in the team who strives to continue working and see it through to the end.

Desmond joins Sigurd's ideas and decides to trace the source of the voice that contacted them after Richard's death. But here's the strange thing: the source is registered at a huge distance from here, at the other end of the Solar System. No signals from the company building, which would be logical and explainable. This information perplexes the Employees.

The solution sneaks in unnoticed. Sigurd assumes that behind the walls is a huge monster. And the task of the Employees is not just to earn credits but to feed this creature so that it continues to live and restrains its anger.

Sigurd is losing his mind more and more. He dreams of escaping and leaving this horrible place, but no one agrees with his ideas. The terrible dream of the monstrous creature breaking down the walls and bursting in on the Employees is the last thing we can learn about Sigurd. The records are cut off.

Desmond's Role

In the last entry, we read the speech not of Sigurd but of Desmond. The technician states that all this time he has been working on restraining and feeding the monster. He regrets that players had to learn this horrifying story. All Desmond can wish for is luck. It will probably be needed.

Easter Eggs

In a separate guide, we have compiled complete information on all the Easter eggs available in the game at the moment. Let's focus again on some of them that reveal additional details in the context of the story told.

Skybox

The sky view is the main evidence that, apart from the moons and darkness, there is a familiar world of people. You can see the blue sky by climbing to a height or using a jetpack. Interestingly, the world does not look like it has advanced 500 years. Perhaps this is just a meaningless whim of the developers, or perhaps another hint that the world, especially the USA, is going through tough times.

Submarine

You can find a submarine on the moon Gordion. The structure is located at the bottom of the complex, and its purpose is unknown. The inscription adds additional mystery: "Don't tell." It's interesting who left the inscription and what exactly cannot be told. About Sigurd's journal? About the Golden Planet? About the monster that the Corporation is feeding? Perhaps we will find out in future game updates.

So, we have tried to thoroughly analyze all the information available at the moment about the lore in Lethal Company. Much is still to be learned, so stay tuned for game updates and publications on our website. Perhaps soon the main secrets will be revealed.
