Shadow of the Erdtree is a large-scale story expansion for Elden Ring that takes players to the dangerous new Land of Shadow. Expect an enthralling tale of demigod conflicts, new bosses, battles, and challenges. In this guide, we will explain how to start the DLC and whether it’s worth starting without completing the main storyline. 

How to Start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC?

The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is designed for high-level characters with good equipment. It is implied that you should level up during the main storyline and then proceed to the DLC. Additionally, it is recommended to face the final boss in the last game quest. 

Here are the steps you need to take to unlock the DLC:

1. Defeat the boss Starscourge Radahn;
2. Defeat the boss Mohg, Lord of Blood;
3. Head to Mohg’s arena;
4. Find the large white cocoon with a hand hanging out of it;
5. Interact with the cocoon and select "Head to the realm of shadow".

Radahn is one of the main bosses in Elden Ring, and the battle takes place on the battlefield at Redmane Castle. If you are playing through the game for the first time, you won’t miss him. If you’ve already completed the story, you can quickly reach him and fight solo or with summoned helpers.

Next, you will encounter the boss Mohg, Lord of Blood, who will be in his palace. Defeating him with an underleveled character without proper preparation will be very challenging.

After defeating Mohg, return to the arena where you fought him. On the opposite end, you will find a large white cocoon with a hand hanging out of it. The cocoon is hard to miss - it stands out with its characteristic bright glow. Head to the opposite side of the arena. Approach the cocoon and press the interaction button. In the menu, select "Head to the realm of shadow." After activating the cocoon, you will be teleported to the new area - the Land of Shadow. 

The new location is comparable in size to the Auriza Side Tomb from the original game. Don’t forget to activate the nearest Site of Grace to have a fast travel point.

To ease your journey, make sure your character is at least level 100-150. Fully upgrade your flask with potions, find all talisman pouches, and stock up on Larval Tears.
