Features and Mechanics of Dying Light 2 You May Not Have Known

19 nov 2021 at 18:04

The continuation of the popular game Dying Light is scheduled to be released in February 2022. However, the developers decided not to torment gamers with a long wait and launched a demo version. This review will cover the features and innovations that await players.

Zombie Variety

During the game, several types of zombies were encountered:

  • Slower zombies that are relatively easy to kill in a one-on-one fight but pose a threat in larger numbers;
  • Faster and stronger zombies that require more effort to deal with;
  • Screamers, who will gather their "colleagues" from all around if they spot the player;
  • Hulking brutes, turning the fight into a real challenge.

The clothing and appearance of zombies will also vary. For example, if you find yourself near a hospital, you may encounter infected individuals dressed in distinct medical gowns.

Remember the zombie from the first part who had a balloon attached to his back? It's also present in Dying Light 2! And you can also send it flying by hitting the balloon.

Map

Once you climb a very tall building and take a look around, it becomes clear that the map is simply enormous. It features buildings of various sizes and appearances.

The gameplay zones also differ from each other. For example, if you look at an infected area, you can see that it's covered in some kind of haze.

The Hero is Infected

From the gameplay, it's evident that the main character is infected. To help fight the virus, a special spray is scattered throughout the city. This encourages players to thoroughly explore locations and visit the most dangerous places. There's a high chance of finding the spray in zombie nests.

But remember, zombies spend their days in their nests and come out to hunt at night.

You can tell that the hero's condition is deteriorating based on the following signs:

  • Coughing;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Redness of the interface.

If the player decides to explore the world at night, there's one important fact to consider. The character will undergo a transformation during that time, and their health will decrease.

What about Health?

One thing that will be lacking is health. This is because it can be easily lost in battles with enemies or from unsuccessful jumps and falls from great heights. Special bandages are required to restore health. To craft them, you need to find beehives and gather flowers around them. Fortunately, the bees won't attack.

You Scratch My Back, I Scratch Yours!

In the city, there will be several factions with which you can establish contact. By completing missions, you can hand over a cleared location to one of the factions. This will not only affect the balance of power but also the player's abilities. The factions won't forget your help and will reward you based on their specificities.

For example, one faction will supply you with traps that work wonders against zombies. There are mines, spikes, and much more.

Another faction will significantly expand your parkour abilities. You'll discover trampolines scattered in various locations that will help you jump over significant distances. The arsenal of combat moves, useful in battle, will also expand.

By the way, you're not limited to collaborating with just one faction; you can help them all. This way, you can combine bonuses and gain a whole set of additional abilities.

Parkour

As for parkour, there will be virtually no limitations. You can climb anywhere, grabbing onto numerous protrusions. The main thing to remember is that stamina will gradually decrease. But this can be remedied! Boosters hidden in various parts of the city can help.

Arsenal

The game will undoubtedly feature both melee and ranged weapons. However, in the few hours of gameplay, we were only able to appreciate the melee weapons. But here the options are abundant. You can craft anything you desire. A seemingly unassuming stick with a blade can become a powerful weapon that can take down multiple zombies at once.

Weapons can also be enhanced with boosters. For example, you can strengthen them with electrical discharges that will damage multiple nearby enemies.

Powerful weapons can also be obtained from bosses when you defeat them.

Regardless of the weapon you arm your character with, severing zombie limbs is quite spectacular.

My Home, My Fortress

Dying Light 2 shares a similarity with the first installment in the presence of safe houses. These are hidden small locations where you can spend the night without fearing an attack. These places can be found in completely unremarkable houses. So, it's another reason to thoroughly explore the game world.

Ultraviolet Lamps

What can help you fend off zombies during the dark hours? Of course, ultraviolet light! Such lamps are located in the bases of factions and their checkpoints. Zombies fear the light and try to stay away from it. Where there are ultraviolet lamps, your character's health will improve, and the virus will weaken.

Be Careful!

Falling from a great height in the world of Dying Light 2 will, at best, result in a significant health loss. In the worst case, it will lead to death. So, it's important to be cautious and not jump from any height.

It's better to look around because there may be pipes that allow you to descend to the ground without any problems.

If there's a mattress below, jump right onto it. Your character won't get injured.

A great means of transportation and avoiding falls is a paraglider! Once you master its control, you can cover long distances while avoiding dangers. Here's a little secret: try to fly past ventilation shafts from which powerful air streams come out. By catching such a stream, the paraglider will gain altitude.

Rooftops

Rooftops are an excellent way to move around. Thanks to them, players can avoid encounters with numerous enemies on the ground. But there's a catch. The buildings are quite tall, and falling from them is not a good outcome. So, be careful when jumping!

A Bit of Humor

During the game, you'll come across some amusing quests. After completing them, you'll hear a joke or two. Even in the conditions of a zombie apocalypse, humor is important!

Don't Stir Up Trouble

The game features a stealth system. This is a very useful tool. For example, during the day, it's better to move quietly in a zombie lair to avoid alerting the inhabitants. Using stealth will also help you take down a "screamer" without making noise. The importance of stealth remains high when dealing with human enemies.

Puzzles

While playing, you will encounter not only enemies but also the need to solve puzzles. This is where you'll have to strain your brain because the tasks won't be easy. They will be challenging but also very captivating. Additionally, they provide a break from combat with enemies and a chance to relax.
