Genshin Impact 2.0 Lore: Who is Xixi and what do the labels (talismans) on her body mean?

If you're interested in the origin and race of Xixi, or as the community likes to call her, "Chicha," then you're about to receive a lot of unique information.

In this article, we'll tell you whether Xixi is really a zombie and what those strange labels on her body mean. Let's get started!

Is Xixi from Genshin Impact a Zombie?

If you thought that Chicha is a zombie, you're partially correct. However, let's dig a little deeper into the origins of her existence.

So, Xixi is a Jiangshi, also known as a Chinese "hopping" vampire (a type of reanimated corpse in folklore/ghost/zombie/undead). Xixi's attire and hat are made in the style of these "zombies." You can see their comparison below.

Of particular note is the label on her forehead, which helps restrain her powers bestowed by an adept. Now, let's discuss this "talisman" in more detail.

What Do the "Labels" on Xixi's Head Mean?

So, the talismans on a Jiangshi hang exclusively on the forehead. Chicha is an exception as she has a total of 4.

Let's break it down:

  1. Talisman on the forehead. The upper part of her talisman bears the character 尚 (which doesn't have a specific meaning), and in the middle is 田 (which might be related to the character 鬼 meaning "ghost/spirit/undead." The last character translates to "king/monarch").
  2. Talisman on the back of the head. Only the character 雨 is clear, which means "rain" (also present in the name Gan Yu). The other characters are difficult to decipher, even for the author of Chinese origin.
  3. Talisman on the leg. The upper character means "order" or "command." In the context of talismans, it can be assumed that it pairs with 敕, and together they mean "imperial or celestial order."

The last one also includes Xixi's name 七七, which translates to "seven-seven." However, I believe the numbers have a different meaning, specifically: 7 squared is 49, and it takes exactly that many days to create these monsters (Jiangshi)!

The decoding of the 4th talisman on her arm remains a mystery, as some characters are derived from old Chinese religious symbols.
