Lor and the main plot of Little Nightmares 2: Our minds have been under their control for a long time

The plot and main idea of Little Nightmares 2 are not as obvious as they may seem at first glance. In the Little Nightmares franchise, there is always a deep moral and hidden subtext that addresses truly non-childish issues.

In this article, we discussed a good theory about why Six betrayed Mono. In this article, we will tell you the main concept and story of the game Little Nightmares 2, as well as another equally interesting theory explaining the secret ending. Let's go!

Warning, spoilers ahead!!!

What is the game Little Nightmares 2 about: plot description

It is worth noting that for a better understanding of the lore of the game Little Nightmares 2, you should perceive what is happening not in a literal sense. The developers hinted during the cinematic trailer that not everything in our life is on the surface. Many things are easier to perceive and understand through images or through dreams.

In turn, a dream is what is stored in our subconscious. And when it comes to nightmares, it is something that torments us deep beyond the bounds of reason. Little Nightmares 2 shows us Mono's terrifying dream, where he tries to find the cause of his anxiety in his subconscious and also confronts his past mistakes.

Let's start with a brief summary: the game extensively tackles a major global problem called "zombification" or one of the methods of controlling humanity. Specifically in the Little Nightmares 2 universe, all of this happens through the main method of spreading mass information from past generations, namely the television and broadcasting system.

We see that literally all the inhabitants are dependent on the screen. It is not difficult to assume that they are being controlled for not the best intentions. They consume unnecessary information 24/7, completely forgetting about normal life. The main source of problems and virus propagation is the television tower.

Anyone who gets in the way of adults or somehow tries to distract them from their favorite activity receives what they deserve. People have literally turned into zombies, which is why all the inhabitants of the Pale City have gone wild. But what about the children?

School and Hospital - methods of controlling the mind

To ensure proper upbringing of children, there is a horrifying School where the creation of the same kind of zombies, with literal empty shells in their heads, takes place.

Children are the future of the next generation, which is why it is very important to take them under the strongest control and teach them a lesson if they are inclined to go against the system.

And now about the fight against the system: no matter how strong it is, every rule always generates resistance (exceptions). And those people who did not succumb to any control ended up straight in the psychiatric hospital.

There, they were dealt with by the Doctor, who did not give them a chance to reform. People who ended up within the walls of the hospital lost themselves forever and turned into empty mannequins.

And those who resist are sent straight behind bars. All of this is clearly shown in the game, step by step, when you put all the pieces together.

The significance of Thin Man (Mono) in Little Nightmares 2

Every system has a Face, and in this case, it's the Thin Man (Mono). His image sits in the minds of all the inhabitants, and his silhouette is seen on all the walls of the game. Thin Man plays an important role in understanding the plot:

  • Thin Man symbolizes the entire system, its control, and existence.
  • The inner evil of Mono.

The second point coincides with the game's cinematic trailer: it is Mono's nightmare, where he tries to find his mistakes in his subconscious but ultimately becomes the leader of the System. Could this be the problem? Maybe he wanted to succumb to the system, but Six saved him? Maybe he is the very Evil?

I understand that all of this is a bit complicated, but the developers didn't want everything to be obvious. Understanding and interpreting dreams is not an easy task, even when it comes to a game.

So did Mono betray Six after all?

As we have already understood, there is an internal struggle between good and evil within Mono. Every time a child is ready to succumb to the system, Six saves them. She always helps him throughout the game, and there is no mention of betrayal. However, a turning point occurred on their journey: they were both caught by the System (Thin Man), but it was Six who was captured.

What did Mono do in that moment? He hid under the table and let the system devour his hope (Six). His mind was clouded, and fear took over. That's the betrayal. Nevertheless, Mono decided to correct his mistake and went in search of his friend. In the end, he heroically destroys the Thin Man, overcoming both the system within himself and evil as a whole.

However, when he finds Six, she has already been affected. She has lost her former humanity and has become dependent on the regime. In her hands, we see a music box that was already seen in the Hunter's Cabin. But specifically in this scene, she clings to it and gets very angry when Mono tries to destroy it.

In this theory, the music box is nothing more than another method of zombification, but for children. When our hero tries to free the girl's true mind, her zombified image becomes very aggressive. But in the end, they succeed, and the pair strives for the light - the way out of this nightmare.

But then Six decides not to forgive Mono and pushes him into the abyss. She didn't believe in his sincerity because he disfigured her soul. In turn, Mono falls, loses faith in humanity, and becomes the very evil and protector of the System.

Well, that's it. If you don't like this particular version, read this theory. In it, we consider the game from a slightly different perspective.
