Dying Light: Secrets and Easter Eggs

16 sep 2021 at 15:45

Easter eggs are always cool. Often, secrets have no impact on gameplay, but their presence makes the game world more detailed and alive. Moreover, it's very satisfying to discover something hidden from the eyes of ordinary players! Interesting Easter eggs demonstrate how much developers love their creation, and this love is usually rewarded. The same happened with Dying Light - this zombie game has won many fans and received positive reviews from critics, and hidden unusual secrets played a significant role in that.

During your solo adventures in the infected city, you will surely come across a couple of Easter eggs, but in reality, there are many more of them. Let's find them all!

SUPER MARIO

During the story chapter "The Saviors," you will enter the Old Town. Go to the lower-left edge of the location. When you reach the desired edge of the map, you will see several buildings close to each other. Find the building with a G-shaped roof. On it, there will be a chimney, and inside it, there will be a green pipe.

Interact with it, and you will unlock a playable level called World 1-1, adapted to the realities of the zombie apocalypse.

During its completion, you will encounter eerie decorations and zombies that can be neutralized by jumping on them from above (just like in Mario!). If you jump in the right place and hit an invisible pink cube with your head, you will be able to climb on it and collect the blueprint for the "Pyza Costume." This clothing item is also a reference to Mario, specifically the Tanooki suit. Pyza allows Crane to glide through the air for short distances.

GUITAR GAME

This Easter egg does not affect gameplay, but it adds a bit of joy to the dark atmosphere of the monster-filled city. Go to Crane's room number 194 in the Brecken Tower in the slums. There you will find a guitar. Press the action button, and the main character will play a simple melody.

During the mission of infiltrating the school with Jade and stealing bombs from Rais' allies, you will come across a locker with a guitar, and on the floor inside, there will be a guitar tutorial book. If you pick up the book and return to the Tower, the now trained Crane will play a cover of the melody from the main menu.

MEMORABLE PHOTOS AND ITEMS

In the same room 194, Crane will collect data obtained during the exploration of Harran. On the bulletin board, the hero will pin photographs of the zombies he encountered, and under each of them, there will be a brief description of the enemy. As you progress through the story, items reminiscent of certain moments or tasks will appear in the room.

CHESS GAME WITH THE INVISIBLE

Do you love playing checkers? Then you will definitely enjoy the following Easter egg! Head to the rooftop of the Brecken Tower. Near one of the walls, you will find a canopy under which there will be a table with a checkers board. You play as the white pieces. Make a move and leave, as you can only make one move per day. When you come back the next day, your opponent will also make a move. After five days of blindfolded games, your opponent will surrender, and on the sixth day, you will find the blueprint for the SHIZbomb - an effective throwing weapon - on the table.

EXCALIBUR

Another reference. It is associated with the legend of King Arthur and the sword Excalibur stuck in a stone. Go to the southeastern borders of the Slums. In that area, there is a rock surrounded by water, and on that rock, there is a corpse impaled with a sword (remember, we don't have a beautiful legend of a brave king, but a horrifying zombie apocalypse!). Approach the sword and hold the action button for about 3 minutes.

After that, you will pull it out of the corpse and become the proud owner of Excalibur. You need to immediately run away from the dead body, as it will ignite, and fire can kill you. When the corpse burns, in its place, you will find the blueprint for creating a similar sword, Expcalibur.

The good news is that the original sword deals heavy damage to enemies and gives Crane 50 agility points for each killed enemy, but the bad news is that the sword cannot be repaired, and its blueprint copies have inferior characteristics.

DEVELOPERS' WEAPON

The most curious and observant players are rewarded with an overpowered weapon at the beginning of the game, which significantly facilitates further travel through Harran. Among the high-rise buildings in the Slums, find a building with a roof in the shape of the letter "S." Climb on it and find a blue box with tools. Press the action button and start kicking it to open it.

You need to hit it from 40 to 80 times, and while you're breaking the box, Crane will express his displeasure and try to make you stop. Pay no attention to the hero's dissatisfaction. Eventually, the box will break, and inside you will find the blueprint for the awesome Korek Machete. It deals 485 damage and has 35 durability. The machete is named after Kornel "Korek" Jaskula, one of the developers of Dying Light, who simply wanted to name a weapon after himself.

THE LOOT CAVE FROM DESTINY

The main attraction in Destiny was the cave with a monster spawn point where you could endlessly kill enemies and farm loot. In Dying Light, there is a reference to this legendary location. Go to the northeast border of the Slums. Find the harbor and the mountain, and then the hole of the right shape near them. Climb into it and swim to the cave. Enter the crevice, and after a while, a message will appear saying, "Determine your fate.

Become a legend. And acquire legendary loot," and numerous zombies will appear. After killing all the monsters, you will receive the message, "Enough! Patch 1.0.2 installed. Better complete some missions," which refers to the patch for Destiny that fixed the loot cave exploit. In the Harran cave, you can find valuable items, resources, and a statuette, and Crane will receive 1000 survival points for visiting it.

QR CODE

The world of Dying Light merges with the real world! At the beginning of the game, when you ride the elevator up, turn right immediately after exiting and find a poster on the wall featuring Jade Aldemir. In the bottom right corner, there will be a QR code. Scan it, and you will be directed to the real website of the city of Harran.

REFERENCE TO LEFT 4 DEAD

Go north from the Brecken Tower in the Slums to the safe zone. There you will see a bakery with a sign that says "Left 4 Bread." This is a reference to another zombie survival-horror game called Left 4 Dead, developed by Valve.

PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES

The last but not least Easter egg is a reference to the beloved childhood game about battling zombies, Plants vs. Zombies.

During the mission "On Air" in the Antenna location, climb up the giant tower and descend on a rope to a rocky area. Proceed forward, climb up a wall, and then go to the right until you come across an orange flower. Interact with it, and you will enter a 3D version of the garden from Plants vs. Zombies, with Harran zombies and giant plants. The monsters are still hostile to you, so don't get too close to them.
