20 Interesting Easter Eggs in Fallout: New Vegas

7 may 2022 at 14:34

For most true fans of classic RPGs, the first two parts of Fallout were the epitome of this genre. When Fallout 3 was released, players' opinions were divided. Some appreciated Bethesda's attempt to make changes to the genre and add something new. Others were disappointed with almost all the innovations: gameplay, story, and the unsuccessful role-playing system. And it was the release of Fallout: New Vegas in 2010 that pleased fans of the series the most.

The thing is, the game managed to combine all the important elements of the unreleased Fallout 3: Van Buren and Bethesda's game engine. The developers put in a lot of effort and made the continuation of the series captivating and interesting. They didn't forget to add numerous Easter eggs and secrets. After all, it is well known that players start thoroughly exploring every corner of the Wasteland after completing the main story. In search of unusual things. A compilation of 20 interesting Easter eggs has been specifically created for such gamers.

20. Indiana Jones

This reference will please those who have watched the movie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." In one of the scenes, the character played by Harrison Ford tries to escape the consequences of a nuclear explosion. As a result, he finds nothing better than to hide in a refrigerator. Many viewers found this scene unrealistic. Apparently, the creators of the game agreed with this, as you can find a refrigerator near the Goodsprings settlement with a skeleton wearing a very familiar hat. Apparently, this method of protection against radiation doesn't work in the Wasteland.

19. Bonnie and Clyde

Two references in the game are dedicated to this "sweet couple." Both of them can be found in the town of Primm. First, the player can visit the local casino and see its most interesting exhibit - the car on which the famous couple of robbers used to ride. It was in this car that they met their death when they fell into an ambush set by Texas Rangers in Louisiana.

After that, in Primm, the player can take a quest about a missing submachine gun. During the quest, the player will encounter Sammy and Pauline Wins, who closely resemble the most famous gangster couple of the 20th century. During the conversation, it is revealed that the new acquaintances are planning to do something serious. The player can try to dissuade them from this idea. It is already known that things did not end well for the real-life prototypes of the couple.

18. Attack of the Grannies

Players could come across this Easter egg at the Cerulean Robotics factory while trying to find a special robot for the bar in Freeside. Suddenly, a group of grannies in old-fashioned clothing unexpectedly attacks the player. It was very difficult for our players to understand that it was an Easter egg. The attack seemed more confusing than anything else. However, this episode is a direct reference to a sketch by the British comedy group "Monty Python." It can be easily found on the internet by searching for "Hell's Grannies." In this sketch, a group of aggressive grannies attacks and harasses passersby. After seeing this, it's not surprising why elderly women attack the game's protagonist.

17. The Empire Strikes Back

Developers of almost every game consider it their duty to add an Easter egg related to the "Star Wars" saga. New Vegas was no exception. To find it, the player needs to visit the town of Nipton. Unfortunately, all its residents were killed by Caesar's soldiers. Only one person survived. It's a sad story for the town, but even in it, there is a place for an Easter egg. If you carefully explore the site of the tragedy, you can find the remains of Owen and Beru. Star Wars fans know that these were the names of Luke Skywalker's uncle and aunt who raised him from childhood. Later, they were killed by the Empire's stormtroopers in "A New Hope."

16. Futurama

This reference is related to the animated series Futurama. Its fans remember one of the saddest episodes where Fry had a four-legged friend named Seymour in the past. In the future, Fry finds the mummified body of the dog and wants to bring it back to life. However, he later learns that his friend died of old age and believed that he had a new family, so Fry decides to let go of his idea. But at the end of the episode, it is revealed that the dog never forgot Fry and waited for him all his life.

This episode touched almost all viewers, and apparently, one of the game developers was among them. That's why in the "Abaddon's Cave," you can find a statue of a dog named Seymour. However, it's unclear whether it was ever a living dog. Now it serves as a small monument to a faithful friend.

15. Unreleased Game Memorial

Every year, a large number of games are released. Some become hits, others are mediocre projects, and some never make it to release and see the light of day. One such game is Zybourne Clock. It is known that it had a protagonist with an interesting name - Johnny "Five Aces." The Courier can come across the body of this character in the Mojave Wasteland. To do this, they need to travel through the mountains from Goodsprings to Primm. Along the way, the hero will encounter a dead person with playing cards next to them. There are exactly five cards, and that's the very same Johnny.

14. Monty Python Strikes Again

Apparently, the developers are fans of the British comedy group's work. After all, references to Monty Python can be found in almost every game. In Fallout: New Vegas, at the former NCR military base completely destroyed by the Legion, you can find three Holy Hand Grenades. If you detonate one of these grenades, the effect will resemble a small nuclear bomb that can kill all enemies along with the main character. The prototype of this Holy Hand Grenade can be seen in the comedy "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

13. Star Trek

This reference is to the cult series "Star Trek." When the player is completing the quest "The King's Gambit," they will encounter a representative of the NCR diplomatic mission named Dennis Crocker. At one point, there will be a dialogue between the characters, and the player can choose the option "Well, there goes my hope that you'd help." In response, the player will hear, "Damn it, I'm an ambassador, not a doctor. Gonna have to find another way." This line actually belongs to Leonard McCoy from the series "Star Trek." It later became famous and was used by English-speaking internet users in any suitable situation.

12. Oblivion

Before acquiring the rights to the Fallout series, Bethesda was already known for another famous project, The Elder Scrolls. The company started incorporating references to it in their new projects. Easter eggs were present in Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and New Vegas was no exception. However, to find this particular Easter egg, one needs to be very observant. While in Freeside, one can notice the pillars. Many of them have a sign with the inscription TES-04. This is a direct reference to the fourth installment of The Elder Scrolls series - Oblivion.

11. Who's in the well?

In order to discover this Easter egg, at the beginning of the game, you need to choose the perk "Wild Wasteland" and take Rex the Robodog as your companion. At a certain point, Rex will start whimpering, and you need to find out what's causing it. By asking different questions, you can notice that Rex reacts to the question "Someone fell in a well?" After that, on the way to the Boomers' base, you can discover Jimmy's Well, where a skeleton lies.

This is a reference to Fallout 2. In the second part, in Modoc, the protagonist could learn from the tanner that his son Jimmy had gone missing. During the search for the child, the player acquired a dog companion who would start barking near the town well.

10. And Russians Again

Players who have watched the movie "Red Dawn" remember that there was a group of partisan schoolchildren fighting against Soviet soldiers when they invaded the USA. That group was called the "Wolverines," and a reference to it can be found in the X-8 Laboratory. On one of the walls, the player will come across the inscription "Wolverines." Additionally, there is another reference to the movie in New Vegas. When attempting to enter a casino, the player is required to surrender all weapons. Among the answer choices is "Come and take it from my cold, dead hands." A direct reference to Red Dawn.

9. In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream

The Battle of Hoover Dam is one of the most massive battles in the game. During the fight, the player may hear the cry, "They're coming out of the walls! They're coming out of the damn walls!" It may sound familiar, and indeed it is. It is the same line Hudson said in the movie "Aliens." Additionally, in one of the rooms, the player can find the corpse of an NCR soldier named Hudson. Surprisingly, his name is Hudson as well.

8. Caruso's Sad Fate

This Easter egg can be found in the Ultra-Luxe Casino. If the player thoroughly searches it, they will find a closed room. Upon entering it, they can see the corpse of a detective named Caruso. The surprise is that he bears a striking resemblance to Lieutenant Horatio Caine, the main character from the TV series CSI: Miami. Coincidence? But the actor who played Horatio Caine is David Caruso.

7. Desecration of the Monument

The first Battle of Hoover Dam didn't leave Mojavé unscathed. 107 NCR soldiers perished, and in their honor, a monument was erected in Boulder City. If you approach the monument, you can notice that it is guarded by Private Kowalski. Among the list of deceased soldiers is Donald Kowalski, his brother. If you attempt to desecrate the monument, Private Kowalski will intervene and prevent any such attempts. As a result, you can either apologize or insult both Kowalskis. This monument is the only inanimate object in the game that NPCs react to.

6. Maps Don't Lead to Good Things

The game's environment often tells sad stories of local inhabitants. For example, in Jacobstown, you can find a house containing a skeleton. It's left to speculate about the cause of death, but there's a clear clue on the table. Inside, along with bottles and an ashtray, there is an exquisite card combination: five kings of the same suit. Apparently, the lucky winner's opponent didn't appreciate it and killed him on the spot. As further evidence, the skeleton lies right next to the chair where he won for the last time.

5. Gremlins

A small alpha-male wasteland creature can be found in the town of Higgs if you choose the Wild Wasteland perk. The mutant resides in Gabe's doghouse behind House 103. It is a dangerous opponent but only pursues the player until the fountain. Its name is Stripe, and it is a direct reference to the horror comedy movie "Gremlins," where there is a gremlin with the same name. Additionally, there is a chicken leg next to the doghouse, which is their favorite treat.

4. Romans, Go home!

If the protagonist has the Wild Wasteland perk, they can find the inscription "Romanes Eunt Domus" on one of the walls of the Cottonwood Cove headquarters. At first glance, what do Romans have to do with it? This is another reference to Monty Python, specifically the movie "Life of Brian." In that movie, the character Brian wants to join the underground Jewish Liberation Front, and to do so, he has to write the same phrase on the wall of a Roman citadel.

3. The Highwayman

The Highwayman is a vehicle from Fallout 2. The protagonist obtains it during the course of the game's storyline. Initially, the car needs to be repaired and then used for their own purposes. Apparently, the Highwayman ended up in the wrong hands because in New Vegas, the player can find its wreckage. However, to do so, they need to reach the Coyote camp. The car is located slightly south, off the road. Additionally, while in the location, soundtracks from the second part of Fallout will be played.

2. Old Friend

The developers are well aware that fans of the Fallout series miss many characters from previous installments. For example, the fate of Harold from Fallout 3 caused a wave of outrage. Perhaps that's why the decision was made to bring back the super mutant Marcus - one of the players' favorite characters from the second part. It was Marcus who helped the Chosen One in saving Arroyo. After the adventure was over, their paths diverged. The main character founded a new city and became its rightful ruler, while Marcus lived in Broken Hills until he decided it was time for a change.

In the end, he ended up in the Mojave Wasteland. The mutant settled on Mount Charleston and established a sanctuary for beings rejected by society. He named his new place of residence Jacobstown after his deceased friend, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel named Jacob. The player can meet the super mutant Marcus, who will be friendly towards the Courier and even help them by revealing the presence of a mutant camp on Black Mountain, where the reception won't be as warm.

1. Greetings from the Past

Players who have played Fallout 3 remember the beginning of the game. The main character is born and witnesses the death of their mother. Then, the upbringing of the child falls entirely on the shoulders of the father named James. James wanted the protagonist to always remember their mother, so among the belongings is a photo card depicting the parents.

The same photograph can be found in Fallout: New Vegas. It is attached to the wall in Vault 21 near Sarah's bed. Of course, it is unlikely that the story of such love was known throughout the western part of the United States. Most likely, the developers simply used existing game resources to decorate the locations. However, the Easter egg still looks very interesting and reminds players of the events that took place in the central wasteland.

All of this is just a small part of all the Easter eggs that can be found in New Vegas. The game holds many surprises, and not all of them are known even to those who have extensively explored every corner of the Mojave Wasteland.
